Ryan Golterman and I had a good day birding in eastern Mahoning Co. today.  We started at Evans L.; best bird there was a RED-NECKED GREBE.  Also seen there: gadwalls, 80 n. shovelers, green-winged teal, Am. black ducks, all 3 mergansers, ruddy ducks, horned & pied-billed grebes, double-crested cormorant, bald eagle, Am. coots, many gulls, belted kingfisher, and e. bluebirds.  Next we visited Pine L.  There were fewer waterfowl there, but we did add bufflehead to the day list.  Gulls were even more numerous there than at Evans L.; the two lakes together held thousands of ring-billeds and dozens of herrings.  At the south end of Pine L. we found a first-winter FRANKLIN'S GULL.  At the north end we saw a couple great blue herons and another belted kingfisher.  In the afternoon we searched agricultural fields in Beaver Twp. and were rewarded with Cooper's hawk, red-tailed hawks, Am. kestrel, horned larks, and snow buntings.  Best birding there was
along Calla Rd.  Around my yard in Poland Twp. (also Mahoning Co.) today there are still 2 red-breasted nuthatches coming to the feeders; Carolina wren and Am. robin were also present.  Craig Holt
