Happy New Year, all: Forgive the late post, but I'd like to report that while participating in the Kingston CBC today, Bill Whan and I had a huge flock of geese at the pond on Spencer Road in Ross County (see below for directions). Among the hordes of Canada Geese were a blue-morph Snow Goose, five Cackling Geese, and at least three Greater White-fronted Geese. These geese move around; a couple of hours later, we saw what was likely a large component of the same flock in farm fields east of the pond, without the snow goose but with another Greater White-Fronted Goose, plus a large amount of Mallards that were not at the pond. Worth checking out while at the pond is a very small wetland down the hill from the pond, which was swarming with sparrows. We had Song, Swamp, White-crowned, Tree, and Juncos, plus a single Rusty Blackbird. Directions to Spencer Road: From US-23, take Grouse Chapel Road east to SR 159, and turn right (south). Turn left on SR 180 and drive about 6 miles east. Spencer Road will be on your left. The pond is about 2000 feet north of the intersection of SR 180 and Spencer Road.
