Lured out by picnic weather, we stopped by a spot discovered by Paul
Hurtado last year along Zuber Rd, namely the little lane on the north
side of Zuber just west of Seeds Rd, where in a snow-free field in
glorious sunlight we found a gathering of 2500+ gulls. Time was short,
and the birds were skittish enough that I didn't get out the scope, but
there was at least one first-year great black-backed gull and one or two
young lesser black-backed gulls in the throng. Chances look good for
some interesting finds again this winter. Farther south on Seeds Road
are some spots that look promising for Smith's longspurs in spring; this
is where flocks of 200-250 were repeatedly found in the '50s and '6os in
April, and some spots probably haven't changed a whole lot since then.
