I was at Pete's Pond Preserve in Wickliffe this afternoon. It is located behind Wickliffe High School. Lake Metroparks put a trail in there this past summer. The trail runs past some cattails adjacent to a small lake and onto the Gully Brook floodplain. I was surprised at the number of songbirds in the brush and cattails adjacent to the trail. Species of note were hermit thrush, marsh wren, and several swamp sparrows. There were a lot of the more common species including numerous song sparrows, red-winged blackbirds, tree sparrows, and others. Most of the areas I have been checking this winter have a few birds here and there. This area was really active. Definitely a nice change of pace. Below are directions if anyone is interested. Directions: Take I-90 to Route 91 exit and turn right, north for 0.2 mile. Turn left at the Willoughby water tower onto Maplegrove. Turn left (west) onto Ridge Road (Route 84) for 1.4 mile. Turn left on Rockefeller Rd. for 0.2 mile. Pete's Pond Preserve is located on the left behind Wickliffe High School. Use the school entrance drive entrance by the park sign. Proceed straight to the northeast corner of the school parking lot where ten parking spots are designated for park visitors to use.
