Guests and members welcome to attend the Tuesday January22 Columbus Audubon program, details below. Visit our website to learn more http://www.columbusaudubon.org/ Back by popular demand, tonight's speaker is Dr Andy Jones, Ornithology Director at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History! Most birders are aware that some of the most spectacular migration days are related to weather events. But when a longtime birder boldly predicts one of these events, what information are they using? This talk will cover the overlap between ornithology and meteorology, particularly focusing on how to understand the movement of high and low pressure fronts and their impact on migrants. The most extreme interactions occur when hurricanes sidetrack migrating birds, and Hurricane Sandy's impact on migration this past fall will be discussed. Andy's talk will be in two parts: one focusing on the relationship between weather events and migration (including websites you will want to revisit), and the second focusing on the latest published research on the biology of migration. Technological advances have given us incredible peeks into the lives of birds, including tracking of individual songbirds for months at a time, and in some cases for multiple years. Dr. Andrew W. Jones is the William A. and Nancy R. Klamm Endowed Chair of Ornithology and curator and head of ornithology at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History.
