This afternoon I drove a route with a friend, starting north of Wooster and heading south along the ponds along Overton Rd. Then over to Funk wildlife area and Wilderness Rd. Then to Shreve Lake and finally the big pond in Killbuck Marsh along Cemetery Rd. We had 21 species of waterfowl and 42 species of birds for the afternoon. Highlights were three common loons (two on Shreve Lake), two horned grebes, 8-10 hooded mergansers including four males displaying very aggressively for one female, a very large flock (1000+) of pintails in a flooded field at Wilderness Rd, and the first phoebe I have seen this year at Killbuck. The most diversity was at Funk, including ponds along Funk Rd north of Funk, the observation tower at Funk, and along Wilderness Rd. We saw 13 species of waterfowl in the Funk area, including about 100 tundra swans. We also saw 20-30 tree swallows, which are my first swallows for the year.
