Hi: We birded the western Ohio Erie lakeshore all day today, Sunday, March 3. Waterfowl numbers were high many places where there was open water. Best viewing was at Sandusky Bay from both the north and south old causeways - fishing piers. There were tremendous waterfowl variety and numbers there. Metzger Marsh had over a 1000 tundra swans and a few trumpeter and mute swans, as well as lots of ducks with large numbers of redheads. Species and rough totals follow: Sandusky Bay (observed from old causeways) Canada goose - 20-30 Mallard - 100s Redhead - 100s Ringneck - 40-50 Ruddy - 3-4 females Canvasback - 40-50 Greater scaup - 20+ Lesser scaup - 40-50 Metzger Marsh Tundra swan - 1000+ Trumpeter swan - one pair Mute swan - 8-10 Canada goose - 100+ Black duck - 20-30 Mallard - 50+ Gadwall - 20+ Pintail - 4 Am. Widgeon - 4 Shoveler - 3 Redhead - 100s Com.
