March 25th: Nomadic Birder: Backpacking Across Africa - Ethan Kistler. Ethan Kistler will be presenting on his four-month odyssey across Africa. Relying on hitchhiking and human kindness he made his way across nine African countries, absorbing local culture, unique birds and fantastic wildlife. A lifelong Ohioan, Ethan began birding at the ripe age of 10 when he literally woke up one morning and decided to become a birder. Since then he's worked field jobs from Ohio to Alaska, traveled to over 20 countries on 4 continents, and led birding trips in Canada, United States and South Africa (where he also lived for two years). When not chasing vagrants across Ohio and the eastern US, he's usually off on spontaneous birding jaunts, leading birding tours or giving presentations. In 2012, Ethan did a local patch big year focusing on the Magee Marsh area tallying 251 species. Due to his regular trips, he wasn't even around for half of the year! Previously the Education and Outreach Specialist for Black Swamp Bird Observatory (BSBO), Ethan is now a board member of the Ohio Ornithological Society. Our last program of the first half of the year is: April 22nd The Dawes Arboretum's Conservation Efforts - Lori Totman, Conservation Director The Dawes Arboretum, Newark Ohio, has grown to nearly 1850 acres in almost 84 years of its existence. The vision of Arboretum Founders, Beman and Bertie Dawes was to create a "tree" museum in central Ohio. Come hear about the Arboretum's present, on-going projects: the Woodland Garden; the American Chestnuts; the Dutch Fork Wetlands and Grasslands complex, and future projects: the Woody Research Area and Sycamore Run Farm. ______________________________________________________________________ Ohio-birds mailing list, a service of the Ohio Ornithological Society.
