Hi, Last Wednesday afternoon and again at about 10am this morning I spotted a bright white--almost Snowy-Owl-esque--buteo along I-71 just a mile or two south of the rt.18 exit in Medina. I'm fairly certain, based on overall appearance and environment that it's a Red-Tailed with profound leucism. I've seen many photographs of such birds over the years, but this was a first personal sighting of one for me. Last Wednesday it was perched on a tree right beside the freeway (as RTHAs like to do!) along the southbound (west) side of 71. This morning I got to watch it fly low, west to east across the freeway. With the sunlight striking its upperparts it was just spectacular--a large brilliant-white raptor with slow, steady wingbeats. Unfortunately it was too far ahead of me (and I was driving at freeway speed, mind you) to verify whether it had a belly band or any red in its tail. I don't think there's any safe and/or legal place to pull over and find or scope this bird--but if you're in the area, it might be worth checking out that stretch of road once in a while. I'm guessing it has marked out its territory there and will be sticking around. Perhaps there is a nest nearby. ...Perhaps someone with a membership at the Fox Meadow Country Club should check out that area!
