On Wednesday, April 17, Shane Roberts, Sandy Tkach, and I conducted the monthly survey route on Kelleys Island. This is the 16th year for the April survey. Our 16 year average is 68 species and 4787 individuals. This year we recorded 74 species and 5097 individuals, both above average. The 74 species is our second highest number of species with 2011's 77 species top. A Louisiana Waterthrush observed along Titus Road was a first for the April survey and a first for any monthly survey on the island. Over the last 16 years we have observed 122 species on the April survey. 51 Canada Goose 4 Wood Duck 34 Mallard * Blue-winged Teal 11 Greater Scaup 207 Lesser Scaup 214 Bufflehead 14 Common Goldeneye 788 Red-breasted Merganser 150 Duck species? 3 Common Loon 2 Pied-billed Grebe 4 Horned Grebe 113 Double-crested Cormorant 26 Great Blue Heron 21 Turkey Vulture 3 Bald Eagle 1 Northern Harrier 2 Cooper's Hawk 1 Red-shouldered Hawk 1 Red-tailed Hawk 1 American Kestrel 13 Killdeer * American Woodcock 143 Bonaparte's Gull 5 Ring-billed Gull 99 Herring Gull 8 Mourning Dove 2 Eastern Screech-Owl 3 Belted Kingfisher 1 Red-bellied Woodpecker 11 Yellow-bellied Sapsucker 11 Downy Woodpecker 15 Northern Flicker 2 Eastern Phoebe 41 American Crow 3 Horned Lark 9 Purple Martin 256 Tree Swallow 4 Northern Rough-winged Swallow 2 Bank Swallow 34 Barn Swallow 65 Black-capped Chickadee 1 Red-breasted Nuthatch 1 White-breasted Nuthatch 13 Brown Creeper 5 Carolina Wren 2 Winter Wren 2 Blue-gray Gnatcatcher 13 Golden-crowned Kinglet 28 Ruby-crowned Kinglet 3 Eastern Bluebird 12 Hermit Thrush 331 American Robin 1 Northern Mockingbird 122 European Starling 1 Louisiana Waterthrush 1 Palm Warbler 2 Pine Warbler 102 Yellow-rumped Warbler 1 Eastern Towhee 20 Chipping Sparrow 4 Field Sparrow 2 Vesper Sparrow 6 Savannah Sparrow 8 Song Sparrow 1 Swamp Sparrow 48 White-throated Sparrow 1 White-crowned Sparrow 3 Dark-eyed Junco 4 Sparrow species? 49 Northern Cardinal 930 Red-winged Blackbird 7 Rusty Blackbird 857 Common Grackle 51 Brown-headed Cowbird 29 House Finch * Pine Siskin * American Goldfinch 55 House Sparrow 74 species 5097 individuals * = Observed on island but not on survey route -- H.
