This morning around 8:30 Larry Richardson called me from the State Route 88
causeway over Mosquito Lake, Trumbull County, with a probable Pacific Loon
that had moved south away from him. We met up at the cemetery parking lot on
the east side of the lake in Cortland and relocated it looking to the north.
It appeared to be in a transitional first year plumage but all the field
marks added up to Pacific. It was smaller than nearby Common's (though we
did not have them in the same field of view). The head was obviously round
with a smaller bill. There was no hint of white extending into the side of
the neck. No white on the sides or flanks at the waterline eliminated
Arctic. Good luck if you search. There is fishing boat traffic moving the
birds around and it is a big lake.
