I squeezed out a bit of time yesterday & today to check out areas along the Scioto River from Griggs dam down through Marble Cliff to Grandview and over to ODOT & Sullivant Trace. Perhaps because of the clear evenings, migration was modest in most of these places. Waterfowl were largely gone from the river and Watermark Lake, but swallows have returned in good #s to these areas. Best landbird migrant fallout was in the least expected place, Sullivant Trace. Notables included: waterfowl - only had 4 Coots, 1 Pied-billed, plus the expected small squads of geese and Mallards Great Blue Herons - common and easily seen all along the area, with lots of commuters from the nearby Shrum Quarry rookery Sapsucker - another lingering individual in the riparian strip below Griggs dam E.Phoebes - common at all sites, but still only obvious flycatcher Swallows - good numbers all along the river; mostly Rough-wings & Trees, but 2 FOS Banks were at Griggs, along with Cliffs Wrens - a few House Wrens at every one of these sites. Carolinas abundant at all 3 sites; the winter didn't dent their #s Gnatcatchers - one of the most common migrants, with the high being 12 in 30 minutes at Sullivant Trace Thrushes - Hermits were at every site, and Sullivant Trace also had a Wood Thrush Kinglets - a few Ruby-crowns were at each site Mimids - Catbirds were at each site, but only singles Warblers - Yellow-rumps still the most common warbler by far. Also found Yellow (Marble Cliff), Yellow-throated (Griggs, Sulliv.Trace), Black-thr.Green (Sulliv.Trace), Pine (Marble Cliff) Sparrows - lots of small flocks of White-throated, with Sullivant Trace the high at 30 birds. Singing Chipping sparrows were also widespread. E.Towhees, were at each spot, with 2 at Sullivant Trace Icterids - the expected Redwings-Grackles-Cowbirds, but no orioles yet, despite perfect habitat ______________________________________________________________________ Ohio-birds mailing list, a service of the Ohio Ornithological Society.
