I recognize that not everyone likes all the new social media. But if you're birding in northwestern Ohio any time between now and May 13, you can get instantaneous alerts about bird sightings throughout the Magee Marsh area and the surrounding region by following @BiggestWeek on Twitter. Already this morning there have been "tweets" (as they're called) from several sites, with locations of Mourning, Hooded, Wilson's, Yellow-throated, and several other warblers, plus Bobolinks, Purple Finches, American Woodcock, concentrations of Bald Eagles, and so on. None of these are worthy of rare bird alerts on a statewide level, but many of them would be of interest if you happened to be half a mile away and you could go to look at them. (They also might be of interest if you're at a distance and just curious about what's being seen.) If you're in the area and can't or don't want to subscribe to Twitter, you can see a feed of the most recent sightings displayed on large monitors at Black Swamp Bird Observatory and at the Lodge at Maumee Bay State Park, festival headquarters for the Biggest Week In American Birding. Good birding, everyone! Kenn Kaufman Oak Harbor, OH ______________________________________________________________________ Ohio-birds mailing list, a service of the Ohio Ornithological Society.
