I used some free time yesterday to visit Old Ridenour Road in Gahanna (a string of greenspaces/parks south of Woodside Green Park) and the Sugarbush Trail at Blendon Woods (a different trail from the more regularly reported Lake & Streamside Trails). As several observers have noted, migrant numbers have tailed off a bit. Diversity, however, still seems fairly good, especially in the early morning. Notables for 45 minute visits to each location included: Wild Turkeys - 2-3 birds at several spots in Blendon Woods Swifts & Swallows - both spots had Chimney Swifts, plus Tree & Rough-winged Swallows Ruby-throated Hummingbird - a single male was patrolling honeysuckle at Blendon Woods Flycatchers - Wood Pewees & Great Crested Flycatchers were calling at both locations Vireos - 2-3 singing Red-eyed Vireos at each location; Blendon Woods also had singing Yellow-throated and White eyed Vireos Gnatcatchers,Wrens - still large #s of House Wrens and Blue-gray Gnatcatchers at both locations Thrushes - singing Wood Thrushes at several spots in both locations; Old Ridenour also had Swainsons Thrushes Mimids - Catbirds at many spots in both locations, with 4-5 individuals each at Blendon & Ridenour Warblers - 16 species, with singles for most species. List included Yellow, Parula, Nashville, Tennessee, Magnolia, Chesnut-sided, Yellow-throated (2 along Ridenour), Yellow-rumped (most common, with 3-4 at each location), Palm, Blackburnian, Blackpoll, Prothonotary (1 along Ridenour), Amer.Redstart, Hooded, Ovenbird (2 singing along Sugarbush trail, where they've nested in past years), CommonYellowthroat Tanagers - multiple singers of both Scarlet and Summer along the Sugarbush Trail Grosbeaks - single Rose-br.Grosbeaks in both Blendon and Ridenour Sparrows - nothing but the expected Chipping, Field, and Song Sparrows Icterids - singing Baltimore Orioles along Ridenour Rd ______________________________________________________________________ Ohio-birds mailing list, a service of the Ohio Ornithological Society.
