I got this just now from a friend who lives about a block away from the traditional yellow-crowned night-heron nests in Columbus, the only known site in Ohio: "I did see one yellow crowned night heron two mornings ago. Of course I haven't seen them since, but I haven't gone at the same time of day. I also notice a slight amount of dung below the nest that's nearest the driveway. The bird that I saw was nearer the other nest, but it was not in any nest. Of course it is difficult to see into the nests themselves." This seems to indicate that one bird only has arrived, and is probably fruitlessly abiding in case another shows up. If only one survives in the original colony, a nest next year would depend on it pairing up with another to migrate up here. A long shot probably, but stranger things have happened.
