See details and dates below. We're filling up fast --Ohio birders have the opportunity to attend multiple "pelagics" this year, on Lake Erie, seeking jaegers, rare gull species and other uncommon and exciting waterbirds. Ohio leads the Great Lakes region in these offshore opportunities - no other state offers boat trips throughout the Fall/Winter period for open-water specialty birds. These birding trips are hands down utterly thrilling, and are making history in our state and abroad. Last year, Local Patch Birding pelagics recorded multiple point-blank Sabine's Gulls and Parasitic Jaegers (5 Pomarine Jaegers in 2011), and a Black Swamp Bird Observatory's trip had fantastic views (for all) of King Eider, with point-blank Pomarine Jaeger and Purple Sandpiper in years past. This year, a whole new set of trips are offered. Local Patch Birding is running four trips in late summer/early fall that target Sabine's Gull, Parasitic Jaeger, and Long-tailed Jaeger. Local Patch Birding (LPB) trip dates are: August 25th, September 1st, September 8th, and September 15th, 2013, falling within the prime period for Sabine's Gull, Long-tailed and Parasitic Jaegers. A fifth trip, offered during the Midwest Birding Symposium, is full. Each Local Patch boat trip is 7 hours in total, covering 40+ miles of open Lake Erie waters, and if weather permits, heading out to 14 miles on Lake Erie, towards the Canadian border. LPB trips leave port out of Vermilion, Ohio. For more details (itinerary, photos) on Local Patch Birding late summer/Fall 2013 boat trips seeking prime rarities, visit: http://www.jenbrumfield.com/?page_id=1775 Stay tuned for late-season BSBO trip dates to be announced, seeking Pomarine Jaeger, Purple Sandpiper, Black-legged Kittiwake and other key rarities (Little and Black-headed Gulls possible, plus Iceland and Glaucous Gulls), and leaving port in Cleveland. Black Swamp Bird Observatory's boat trip dates have yet to be determined and will be announced within the summer period. best of birding - jb Jen [log in to unmask] Cleveland, Ohio 330-701-6452 ______________________________________________________________________ Ohio-birds mailing list, a service of the Ohio Ornithological Society.
