I biked the Multi-use path through this south Columbus greenbelt this morning, starting at Wolfe Park and working south all the way to Heron Pond in 3-Creeks Park. This area represents a narrow wooded corridor running through a very developed urban area; it only expands to fields south of Watkins Road. Water levels in Alum Creek were very high and fast, so waterbirds were limited. Landbirds, however, were good; the cloudy weather kept conditions cool, so birds stayed active longer. Notables included: Yellow-billed Cuckoos - birds were singing both at Watkins Road and the Oxbow Area in 3-Creeks Acadian Flycatchers - several were calling in the Oxbow Area of 3-Creeks Willow Flycatchers - good #s, with 7-8 on territories mostly in the northern reaches of 3-Creeks Park Great Crested Flycatchers - singles at many different areas along the Greenbelt Swallows - Barns were widespread, but I also had Tree and Rough-winged in a few locations Vireos - Red-eyed, oddly enough, were more common here than Warbling, a switch from years past (and the OBBA2) Gnatcatchers - 1-2 at many different locations along the Greenbelt Wood Thrushes - still singing at many different locations; 3 at Oxbow was the most Mimids - no Mockingbirds here, but Catbirds were widespread and common all along the Greenbelt Yellow Warblers - lots of birds still singing, especially in areas south of St.Rte. 104 (mostly in 3-Creeks) Parula Warbler - 1 was singing in the Oxbow Area of 3-Creeks Yellow-throated Warblers - 3 different singers were at Wolfe, Hanford Village, and Watkins Rd sections of the Trail. Black&White - a male was singing in a Grape tangle along the Creek behind the Yassenoff Center Com.Yellowthroats - 5-6 were singing in the overgrown fields along Watkins Rd and the old Smith Farm areas of 3-Creeks Field Sparrows - still many singers in overgrown fields from Petzinger Rd south through 3-Creeks Park Grasshopper Sparrow - 1 was singing in a weedfield in the Smith Farms area of 3-Creeks E.Meadowlarks - 4 were singing and foraging in the weedfields of Smith Farms area of 3-Creeks Baltimore Oriole - 1 was singing along Alum Creek near where it crosses under Watkins Rd Orchard Oriole - a female was calling defensively in an overgrown field south of Watkins Rd ______________________________________________________________________ Ohio-birds mailing list, a service of the Ohio Ornithological Society.
