This evening I spent a couple hours at Dillon Reservoir. The water levels at this reservoir are raised and lowered at the whim of the Army Corps of Engineers, but at the resent moment there are extensive mudflats visible from DNR Road #7. I had my scope, but only saw 4 species of shorebirds. There were over 30 killdeer, about a dozen spotted sandpipers (both adults and juveniles), a solitary sandpiper and at least four peeps, which I believe were semipalmated sandpipers (black legs and bill, a little smaller than the spotties.) However, that could change. I’ll check the beach area in the morning. The beach is no longer used for swimming, but this evening there were several people walking their dogs there.

Best time of day for viewing from DNR #7 is evening (sun behind you). Best time for viewing from the beach is morning (back to the east). In years past, some pretty good shorebirds have been reported from Dillon, and with so little available mudflats, this could be a good area.
