On Monday, August 19, Paula Bartlett, Tom Behlen, Pat Hayes, Vic Fazio, and myself conducted the 16th August survey. Beautiful day but quiet for birds. We observed 61 species which is 2 below the 16 year average of 63 species on an August survey. The 3665 individuals observed were slightly above the 16 year average of 3359 individuals. The Veery observed at the state park's North Trail was a first for August. An adult Merlin observed along the west shoreline was a second August record for the survey. 217 Canada Goose 52 Mallard 201 Double-crested Cormorant 20 Great Blue Heron 1 Great Egret 8 Turkey Vulture 1 Merlin 8 Killdeer 2 Spotted Sandpiper 1 Least Sandpiper 348 Bonaparte's Gull 957 Ring-billed Gull 211 Herring Gull 4 Caspian Tern 1 Common Tern 4 Mourning Dove 3 Black-billed Cuckoo 1 Yellow-billed Cuckoo 4 Eastern Screech-Owl 8 Chimney Swift 3 Ruby-throated Hummingbird 1 Red-bellied Woodpecker 9 Downy Woodpecker 10 Northern Flicker 3 Eastern Wood-Pewee 1 Least Flycatcher 1 Eastern Phoebe 1 Great Crested Flycatcher 36 Eastern Kingbird 9 Warbling Vireo 12 Red-eyed Vireo 2 Blue Jay 16 American Crow 251 Purple Martin 23 Tree Swallow 1 Northern Rough-winged Swallow 3 Bank Swallow 310 Barn Swallow 69 Black-capped Chickadee 1 Red-breasted Nuthatch 30 Carolina Wren 5 House Wren 2 Blue-gray Gnatcatcher 1 Veery 56 American Robin 5 Gray Catbird 76 European Starling 94 Cedar Waxwing 25 Yellow Warbler 1 Chestnut-sided Warbler 1 Warbler species? 45 Northern Cardinal 5 Indigo Bunting 19 Chipping Sparrow 92 Red-winged Blackbird 261 Common Grackle 2 Orchard Oriole 37 Baltimore Oriole 19 House Finch 13 American Goldfinch 62 House Sparrow 61 species 3665 individuals Tom -- H.
