I spent an hour-and-a-half roaming around areas along the shore of southern Hoover Reservoir, from the dam up to Area F, looking for early migrants. No real shoreline or gravel bars exposed yet, but the water level was a bit lower than in late July (but that was before this afternoon's thunder showers). I found 45 species, with only a few unusual ones: Cormorants - 20+ scattered around the southern reservoir Gulls - 100 Ring-bills and 3 Herring scattered around the lower reservoir; the Herring were all around Walnut St. ramp. Caspian Terns - had 2 adults and a juvenile circling, but later they flew south over the dam Belted Kingfishers - 5 along the shore probably represents post-nesting wanderers Flycatchers - hardly any. Calling Acadians in the ravine next to the disc golf course were likely residents. Swallows - a modest flock around the dam included Cliffs, Barns, and Rough-wings, along with 30 Chimney Swifts Vireos - nothing but Warbling Vireos, several of which were all along the shoreline Thrushes - E.Bluebirds were at Area F, where they nest. Small flocks of Robins were at several locations Cedar Waxwings - small flocks with juveniles at many locations, often near berry bushes or fruit trees Warblers - nothing other than a few Yellows below the dam, likely migrants Sparrows - nothing but Chipping and Song, which are expected here. Orioles - a juvenile Baltimore was near the County Line bridge, while a female and juvenile Orchard were at Area F ______________________________________________________________________ Ohio-birds mailing list, a service of the Ohio Ornithological Society.
