Thanks for the posting, Justin. I do not mean to hijack the excitement of this sighting, but I feel the need to share some information about the Camp Perry facility and the fact that Piping Plovers have been found on the beach at the facility multiple times over the years. It is very important that birders document the presence of this Federally Endangered species at the Camp Perry beach since (as far as anyone knows...) they are still planning to install a very large wind turbine at that facility. Both state and federal wildlife agencies have voiced their serious concern over this location (multiple times over the last few years) both in meetings and in formal documents. But with the guidelines for wind energy development having no regulatory "teeth" in this country, Camp Perry could still go forward with the project. BSBO has put forth significant effort to try and convince Camp Perry officials not to install a wind turbine in this very sensitive area. BSBO submitted a letter to officials at Camp Perry officials, Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur, and many Ohio Lawmakers. Many organizations signed on in support of our position. They include, American Bird Conservancy, American Birding Association, League of Ohio Sportsmen, Grange Insurance Audubon Center, Black Swamp Conservancy, Ohio Ornithological Society, Ohio Wetlands Association, Indiana Audubon Society, Toledo Naturalists' Association, Greater Mohican Audubon Society, and Kelleys Island Audubon. The following organizations also wrote independent letters in support of our position on this project: National Audubon Society, American Birding Association, The Nature Conservancy, Ohio Environmental Council, Ottawa County Visitors' Bureau, Ducks Unlimited. We made a formal request to Camp Perry (under the Freedom of Information Act) for documents related to the this project resulted in ZILCH! We got nothing from them. And, unless BSBO is willing to wade into litigation to force them to turn over the documents, there doesn't seem to be much more we can do at this point but wait for them to make their next move. For more details on this project and BSBO's efforts toward responsible wind energy development in areas of migratory bird stopover habitat in the Lake Erie marsh region, visit the BSBO website homepage and scroll down. www.bsbobird.org Kimberly Kaufman Executive Director Black Swamp Bird Observatory Oak Harbor, Ohio 43449 419-898-4070 -----Original Message----- From: Ohio birds [mailto:[log in to unmask]] On Behalf Of Justin Bosler Sent: Tuesday, August 20, 2013 5:15 PM To: [log in to unmask] Subject: [Ohio-birds] Piping Plover - Camp Perry Beach (Ottawa Co.)
