The Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge has many opportunities for birders to enjoy the auto tour route this month. This week, with all of the extra birders in the area for the Midwest Birding Symposium, the auto tour will be open Thursday - Sunday, September 19th-22nd. Next week, with the Federal Duck Stamp judging, and Cars for Critters Car Show it will be again be open Thursday - Sunday, September 26-29th. Birds of note from a quick trip through the route today were Wilson's Snipe, Snowy Egrets, Greater Yellowlegs and some distant dowitcher's. Water levels have been lowered in Unit 5, near stop 7 on the auto tour and it is starting to attract some shorebirds.
