The 16th September monthly survey was conducted yesterday by Paula Bartlett, Tom Behlen, Pat Hayes, a gentleman named John ??? (from the Warren area but can't remember his last name; hopefully he reads this and sends me an email), and myself. The weather was beautiful but it was the 4th day of south winds so migrants were few and far between. We managed 58 species and 3389 individuals. The September 16 year average is 72 species and 4933 individuals. Highlights included an Egyptian Goose (escape), Wood Duck, American Golden-Plover, Merlin, Philadelphia Vireo, and 11 species of warbler. The goose has been here for about a week and is with a flock of Canada Geese on the SW side of the island. The plover is in the mowed field east of the ferry dock. 226 Canada Goose 1 Egyptian Goose 2 Wood Duck 110 Mallard 222 Double-crested Cormorant 13 Great Blue Heron 14 Turkey Vulture 4 Bald Eagle 2 Sharp-shinned Hawk 1 Merlin 1 American Golden-Plover 11 Killdeer 219 Bonaparte's Gull 1927 Ring-billed Gull 332 Herring Gull 1 Great Black-backed Gull 1 Caspian Tern 15 Mourning Dove 1 Yellow-billed Cuckoo 1 Eastern Screech-Owl * Great Horned Owl 3 Ruby-throated Hummingbird 2 Red-bellied Woodpecker 10 Downy Woodpecker 12 Northern Flicker 4 Eastern Phoebe 1 Philadelphia Vireo 1 Red-eyed Vireo 21 Blue Jay 29 American Crow 2 Tree Swallow 32 Black-capped Chickadee 1 Red-breasted Nuthatch 1 White-breasted Nuthatch 11 Carolina Wren 3 House Wren 7 Swainson's Thrush 5 Thrush species? 38 American Robin 4 Gray Catbird 60 European Starling 9 Cedar Waxwings 1 Ovenbird 4 Black-and-white Warbler 1 Nashville Warbler 2 Common Yellowthroat 3 American Redstart 9 Magnolia Warbler 1 Chestnut-sided Warbler 1 Yellow-rumped Warbler 10 Blackpoll Warbler 1 Black-throated Green Warbler 1 Wilson's Warbler 22 Warbler species? 7 Chipping Sparrow 1 Swamp Sparrow 37 Northern Cardinal 1 Indigo Bunting 1 Common Grackle 4 House Finch 19 American Goldfinch 3 House Sparrow 58 species 3489 individuals * = observed on island on survey day but not on route Tom -- H.
