Darlene Sillick Columbus Audubon, co-program chair Please join us at 7:00 pm on Tuesday, September 24, at the Grange Insurance Audubon Center as we welcome Stephen Kress to tell us about Restoring Endangered Seabirds: Lessons from Puffins and Terms. Humans have devastated seabird colonies in many parts of the world by excessive hunting for food and feathers and by introducing mammals such as cats and rats to otherwise secure nesting islands. Worldwide, 29% of all seabird species are now globally threatened as marine pollution, coastal development and effects of global warming are growing concerns. And while seabird nesting islands seem safe due to their remoteness, they are intimately connected to human activities. Tonight's speaker, Steve Kress, will tell us about the techniques that he developed on Maine islands to help restore puffins and terns to historic nesting islands and how these same techniques are helping seabirds worldwide. His talk will include case studies in seabird restoration as diverse as Common Murres in California to relocation of Short-tailed Albatross off of an active volcano in Japan and even efforts to save the endangered Bermuda Petrel from rising oceans and increased frequency of hurricanes. Steve Kress is Vice-President for Bird Conservation for the National Audubon Society and Manager of the Society's Maine Coast Seabird Sanctuaries. As Director of Audubon's Seabird Restoration Program, he develops techniques for managing colonial nesting seabirds. In this capacity, he has re-established seabird colonies along the Maine coast for Atlantic Puffins, Arctic, Common and Roseate Terns, and Leach's Storm-Petrel. In the Pacific, he has conducted conservation projects for endangered Dark-rumped Petrels in the Galapagos Islands and Short-tailed Albatross on Midway Island as well as many other species. You may not know this important fact about Steve: he is a Buckeye.: he received his B.S. and M.S degrees from Ohio State University before going on to a Ph.D. from Cornell. He is currently a Research Fellow at the Cornell Lab. of Ornithology where he teaches a popular course in Field Ornithology. He is a former director of the Audubon Camp in Maine and was ornithology instructor at Hog Island for many years. Among his many books on birding and backyard wildlife management, he is author of The Audubon Society Guide to Attracting Birds, Bird Garden, The Audubon Society Birder's Handbook, the Audubon Birdfeeder Guide, Saving Birds, Project Puffin, and Birdlife (Golden Guide), as well as many scientific papers on seabird biology and conservation. 7:00 - 7:15 pm: CA Short Program: Join Columbus Audubon past president Julie Davis for a fascinating look at The Arts of Birding on Hog Island. Julie will be telling us about her experience at the famous Hog Island Audubon Camp in Maine -- not far from some of the Steve Kress' seabird colony work! 7:15 - 7:30 pm: Social time, refreshments and bird quiz of some of the birds you will find on Hog Island with specimens on loan from The OSU bio-diversity museum- thank you Angelika Nelson! 7:30 - 9:00 pm: Main program, door prizes Columbus Audubon public programs are free and open to the public.
