Regarding the birds found Monday at Ottawa NWR - If you're considering driving from any distance away to look for them, I would suggest checking first to see if the refuge is open. Ottawa is a federal refuge, and with the government apparently shutting down tonight, it's possible that the whole area will be closed to the public. I don't know for a fact that this would happen, but it's a possibility. Keep in mind that if the refuge does have to close temporarily because of this, it's not the fault of the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service employees who work there. They are dedicated, hard-working professionals, and in this government shutdown nonsense, they are victims just like the rest of us.
