I stopped by the beach at Deer Creek State Park this evening and located a single Franklin's Gull sitting on the water amongst several Ring-bills. The bird looked to have brownish coverts, so I would guess this is a first winter bird. Also present on the beach area were 5 Forster's Terns and an impressive roost of vultures - 50+ Turkey Vultures and 3 Black Vultures. After the beach, I visited the wetland areas south of the reservoir that Robert Royce has highlighted in earlier posts. The middle wetland still contains great shorebird habitat, and I found 10 shorebird species in the fading light. Highlights included Baird's, Western, and Stilt Sandpipers, and a Long-billed Dowitcher. See the eBird checklists below for more details.
