Here are several upcoming counts for northwest Ohio: December 14 - Tiffin, Ohio - Compiler: Jim Coffman ([log in to unmask]) December 15 - Erie Islands - Compiler: John Pogacnik ([log in to unmask]) (Remember that this count will require a ferry ride or flight to get to one of the islands. If you are planning to go to Kelleys Island, check KelleysIslandferry.com for the schedule. It will only run a couple of times that day. And you may want to bring food. The only restaurant, The Village Pump, is closing on December 14. The Island Market will be open and does have cold sandwiches, coffee, and other stuff.) We currently have people on Kelleys, Pelee, South Bass, Middle Bass, and Green Islands. More eyes are always better. Be nice to get someone to North Bass. That would require a flight (~$100) and your own food. There are no stores on the island and only one outhouse which is on the south side. There are trees... If you are interested, contact Lisa Brohl. She is coordinating the people on the Bass Islands and may have another way to get you to North Bass. January Counts January 3 - Carey, Ohio - Compiler: Eric Mulholland ([log in to unmask]) This count covers Carey area, Upper Sandusky area, Sandusky River areas, and Springville Marsh. January 4 - Gypsum, Ohio - Compiler: Tom Bartlett ([log in to unmask]) This count covers Marblehead, Catawba Island, Darby Unit of Ottawa NWR, northern areas of Winous Point Marsh Conservancy, Port Clinton, East Harbor State Park, Sandusky Bay, Medusa Marsh, Castalia, and Resthaven Wildlife Area January 5 - Ottawa NWR - Compiler: Tom Bartlett ([log in to unmask]) This Count covers Ottawa NWR, Magee Marsh, Metzger Marsh, Toussaint Wildlife Area, Graytown area, and Oak Harbor. If you are planning a January 100, these are very good counts for getting a good start. I typically have between 80 and 90 species after doing these three counts. Tom -- H.
