I took off a few hours this morning to check areas around the Hoover Reservoir dam, NE of Columbus. I stopped at the dam, the Hoover Nature Trail, and the Walnut Ravine (Area S) areas, looking for winter strays, but with little success. The lower reservoir was swamped with high water, as was the dam spillway, so many of the dabblers found by the Hoover CBC last week were absent today. There was a Common Loon, along with flocks of Ring-billed Gulls (90) and Coots (20), off the dam. Landbirds below the dam and at the other 2 sites were mostly expected, but there were 1-2 Golden-crowned Kinglets at every spot, and a flock of 8 E. Bluebirds in the field at Area S.
