Checked these parks south of Columbus (in suburb of Groveport) looking for winter birds with mixed success. I stopped at the Borrow Pits and Confluence area of 3-Creeks, then went over to Cruiser Pond (completely frozen) and the Tall Pines loop at Walnut Woods. I had hardly any raptors, so they must be lying low in the cold temps, but did get a firsthand report of a Barred Owl near the Borrow Pits (Mike Horn). Birds I did have included: woodpeckers - nothing unusual, but many Downies,Red-bellies, & Flickers, with Hairies at Confluence & Walnut Woods Brown Creepers - present in every area, with the high of 4 at Walnut Woods Red-br.Nuthatches - alerted by one reported by the 3Creeks team on the CBC, I checked there with no success. But Walnut Woods had 3 in the pine grove in the far NW corner of the park Golden-cr.Kinglets - good #s, with 2-3 at nearly every stop Hermit Thrush - 1 was feeding on honeysuckle berries at the Confluence area Mockingbird - one was along the south side of Cruiser Pond Tree Sparrows - small groups were at Cruiser Pond & Walnut Woods Swamp Sparrows - singles were at the Borrow Pits, Cruiser Pond, and Walnut Woods ______________________________________________________________________ Ohio-birds mailing list, a service of the Ohio Ornithological Society.
