Hi all, I made a series of stops this afternoon along the Ohio River above Meldahl Dam. All birds were observed from Ohio, but many of the birds were in Kentucky waters. This is by far the most active I've seen the river in places away from the dam. More detailed location info can be found in eBird. 419 Canada Geese 5 Mute Swan - Meldahl Dam 20 American Black Duck 135 Mallard 2 Northern Shoveler - Ripley OH riverfront 76 Canvasback - scattered flocks 92 Redhead - about 60 at Chilo lock 34 park 191 Greater Scaup - Large group of about 110 between August KY and Higginsport OH 1 Lesser Scaup - female with the large group of greaters, its been amazing how few there have been in recent weeks. 18 White-winged Scoter - 14 between August KY and Higginsport OH and 4 seen from Chilo lock 34 park 6 Long-tailed Duck - Ripley OH river front, 2 adult males. distant photo in eBird 7 Bufflehead 73 Common Goldeneye 386 Common Merganser - similar distribution to a birdky listserv report yesterday, large flocks of 90-140 birds at the confluences of several tributaries. Most of these in OH 76 Red-breasted Merganser - Scattered throughout the Common Merg flocks 1 Ruddy Duck Other birds of interest: 8 Double-crested Cormorants at various locations 133 Ring-billed Gull - about 70 at Meldahl 8 Herring Gull - 7 at Meldahl I was at Meldahl dam around 6pm, and it looked like a small gull roost was starting to form several hundred yards upstream. By the time I left it had about 50-60 birds. This area has been surprisingly quiet all winter.
