The bay above the Greenlawn dam (in Scioto Audubon MetroPark, just south of downtown Columbus) is the place to be on the Scioto River today. Not only is there an ice shelf that's attracted hordes of gulls, but the diving waterfowl have congregated just downstream of the shelf. The numbers this morning included

Common Goldeneyes - 16
Common Mergansers - 15
Red-br.Mergansers - 10
Hooded Mergansers - 40
Ring-billed Gulls - 800+
Herring Gulls - 12+

With gull numbers like this, it's a fair bet that unusual gulls will show up soon. I didn't see any this morning, but was only there for about a half hour, and gulls were moving in and out all of the time.

I also stopped at Long St Dam, which had little, and the Greenlawn cemetery, which still had a sapsucker, mockingbird, and flocks of juncos near the pit. Other areas downriver were less productive.
