Friday, March 14: For those who can get out today in northwest Ohio, there should be at least a fair flight of migrants along the Lake Erie shoreline. After the rude interruption of the last two days, birds should be moving north on a broad front in today's warmer temperatures. The current southwest winds should concentrate them near the lake shore. Daytime migrants at this season include Turkey Vulture, Red-shouldered Hawk, Northern Harrier, Red-tailed Hawk, and a few other raptors, plus Sandhill Crane, American Crow, Lapland Longspur, Horned Lark, and Eastern Meadowlark. Large numbers of Red-winged Blackbirds and Common Grackles are moving, and increasing numbers of Rusty Blackbirds should be mixed into the flocks now. Maumee Bay State Park is one of the better vantage points along the lake shore, but to a lesser extent you can observe the same movement anywhere around the Magee Marsh / Ottawa NWR / Metzger Marsh area, or even at lakeshore points farther east in Ottawa and Erie counties. By tomorrow (Saturday) winds are supposed to shift more to the west, and the flight probably won't be apparent. After today, it appears that the next good opportunity for a flight would be next Wednesday, the 19th.
