To all Ohio birders and more, Western Cuyahoga Audubon chapter is a community sponsor for this film ... if you can view it at the Cleveland International Film Festival ... we'd love to see you there! ----- Original Message ----- From: "Kenn Kaufman" <[log in to unmask]> To: [log in to unmask] Sent: Monday, March 17, 2014 10:54:15 PM Subject: [Ohio-birds] New Birding film coming to Cleveland As some Ohio birders have already heard, there's another feature-length film coming out that involves birding as a central plot element. "A Birder's Guide to Everything" is not a big-budget movie - for reference and comparison, "The Big Year" cost about forty times as much to make - but it achieves professional quality, and some of the pre-reviews have been extremely positive. For example, USA Today said "Not since Rob Reiner's *Stand By Me* has such a compelling rite-of-passage film emerged." And it was a hit at The Biggest Week In American Birding in May 2013, when we had the Ohio premiere at Maumee Bay Lodge. The film is coming to the big screen this week, but only in a few cities. People in Cleveland have a chance to see it at the Cleveland International Film Festival, with showings at 7:20 pm on Thursday, March 20, and at 12:10 pm on Friday, March 21. More information is here: http://www.clevelandfilm.org/films/2014/a-birders-guide-to-everything I would encourage birders to read about the film and then consider coming out to see it. The film is a drama, not a documentary about birding, but it treats its main characters with respect; the birders aren't made to look like caricatures. I think it will have a positive impact overall on the public image of birding. Disclaimer: I have no financial stake in the film. I was a consultant, but not a paid one, since they had no budget for consultants. I volunteered my time because I was so impressed by the dedication and integrity of the film's director and co-writer, Rob Meyer. But I believe that if the film does well financially, we may start to see more positive, realistic portrayals of birders and naturalists in popular culture.
