The dark morph Rough-legged Hawk that I reported yesterday was seen again today by Irina Shulgina, and she was able to see and photograph its tail, which turns out to be red, making this a dark morph Red-tailed Hawk, probably of the western (calurus) subspecies. She was able to get a great photograph showing this bird's tail and overall dark coloration: http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S17323783 Certainly a great bird and a good learning experience (I didn't see anything to contradict my assumption of Rough-legged Hawk when I viewed it perched yesterday...the danger of assumptions, I suppose). I really didn't expect to see a dark Red-tailed in Ohio.
