Subject: [Ohio-birds] red-necked grebe at Haul Road, 030914

Very few birds were observed at the Haul Road quarry, compared to two days earlier. I saw two lesser scaup, 4 redheads, 2 bald eagles on their nest, a group of ring-billed gulls and some Canada geese. A birder was leaving as we arrived, informing us that the grebe was not seen. We remained to study the eagles and suddenly saw the grebe swimming from across the quarry along the edge of the ice sheet. Watched it feeding for about 45 mins. Noticed a nice red nape behind the head and light red coloration beginning along the cranial portion of the neck. A picture is in ebird (S17384008).
