I spotted two red-necked grebes from the South Bass Island State Park late
this afternoon. One was very close inside the dock for awhile.

Other waterfowl in the area included a horned grebe, double-crested
cormorants, common goldeneye, and red breasted mergansers.

Just when the ice was leaving the harbor of Put-in-Bay this weekend, we had
large numbers of lesser scaup, redheads, canvasback, ring-necked ducks (100's
of each.) There were also common goldeneye, bufflehead, and red-breasted
mergansers in smaller numbers. Hooded mergansers were reported in two other
locations on the islands shores. A pied-billed grebe was also diving in the
bay near the pond entrance. A belted kingfisher and great blue heron were in
the pond where the bald eagles have taken up residence in the nest again this
year. Large numbers of double-crested cormorants as well as Bonaparte's gulls
appeared over the weekend as well.
