My initial objective was to monitor my Prothonotary Warbler nest boxes along the shore near Wiese Road. However, very persistent birds convinced me to stray from my good intentions. Activity was the best I have seen it in years along this stretch of old road, now part of the Ohio to Erie Bike Path. The area skirts along the upper western shoreline of Hoover Reservoir and the extension off the bike path is almost primitive. Habitat includes the reservoir, the bike path edge area, wetlands, deciduous forest, a few yards and some old orchard. A nice variety of habitat all in one and today's list shows birds from each of them. My highlight of course was the Prothonotary Warblers. I had 10 males along the stretch. The females should be in the nest during the morning laying one egg a day until the clutch is complete. I tallies 16 warbler species in all including 4 nice male Wilson's. I phished to attract the initial one which I had spotted and out came 4. A nice surprise. Thrush and vireos were also well represented this morning and with the new active nest hole I discovered I know of 15 pairs of Red-headed Woodpeckers in the preserve this spring. I almost missed a species as there was a male purple finch mixed with 4 House finches. I'm glad I took the time to focus on the finches as this guy almost sneaked pass me.
