A sighting of a bird that is not migratory and appears far
Greetings,

A sighting of a bird that is not migratory and appears far outside its range, such as the Crested Caracara (CRCA), is most interesting.

RE "expected vagrant" ... The Crested Caracara is sedentary so it is not possible to be an "expected vagrant", even if sightings are somewhat regular on a year-to-year basis.  Escaped birds have to be considered.  Falconer's are not interested in CRCAs but illegal harboring of any species by "collectors" does occur.

Being able to age the CRCA is important--young birds are more likely to just get up and go 1000 miles or so out of their normal area.  It looks like an adult appeared at Cape May earlier in the month.

Bill and Jen,
I appreciate your education and info on the Caracara.  My post was
merely to express my surprise and chagrin at this apparent sighting in Ohio
or close by, since as I said this had been a running gag among some close
birding friends that this wasn't something we were likely to see around
central Ohio.   Sounds like I'll need to change to a Kiwi or something.
Rest assured my intent was not to upset either of you or anyone else.  It
was meant as something "light".
Thanks to both of you for your frequent posts and info.

Best,
Kim
