Every year around this time I take a trip down part of the Scioto in my Kayak by either starting at my house, or ending there. This year it was start from my house (I live by the river) and go to Espyville Rd. As the bird flies it is 7.9..ish miles, but as the Kayak floats...and my arms paddle...it was 13 :-O No wonder I'm tired. Kayak went in the water at 2 pm and was back on the chase vehicle at 8pm...so that is about 2-2.5 knots (mph, not like the knots in my arms. :-D ) Some of the birds are by ear due to the speed at which I was floating by, dodging trees, counting turtles, portaging the kayak around obstacles...etc, and the mud all over my binoculars (I had mud all over everything by the time I got to Espyville Rd. :-D.) No pictures due to I didn't want to risk losing my camera to the muddy Scioto. :-) But I still had a great day birding. I got four for my 2014 county list...7 away from 170...which will put me 20 over last year...but I am going to go for 180...if we can get the right birds down/up here. Happy Birding, and God Bless! Since there was a lot of turning in the river, the distance was considerably more. But line of sight is 8 miles. 67 species Canada Goose 8 Wood Duck 4 Mallard 8 Ring-necked Pheasant 1 Great Blue Heron 4 Turkey Vulture 4 Bald Eagle 4 Red-tailed Hawk 2 Killdeer 3 Spotted Sandpiper 1 Mourning Dove 4 Yellow-billed Cuckoo 6 Barred Owl 1 Chimney Swift 3 Ruby-throated Hummingbird 1 Belted Kingfisher 2 Red-headed Woodpecker 6 Red-bellied Woodpecker 6 Downy Woodpecker 4 Hairy Woodpecker 1 Northern Flicker 2 Pileated Woodpecker 2 Eastern Wood-Pewee 4 Acadian Flycatcher 2 Willow Flycatcher 1 Great Crested Flycatcher 4 Eastern Kingbird 2 Warbling Vireo 4 Red-eyed Vireo 1 Blue Jay 2 American Crow 2 Purple Martin 4 Tree Swallow 20 Bank Swallow 2 Barn Swallow 4 Carolina Chickadee 2 Tufted Titmouse 2 White-breasted Nuthatch 2 House Wren 2 Carolina Wren 2 Blue-gray Gnatcatcher 4 American Robin 2 Gray Catbird 4 Brown Thrasher 2 Northern Mockingbird 1 European Starling 5 Cedar Waxwing 20 Prothonotary Warbler 1 Common Yellowthroat 1 American Redstart 1 Northern Parula 2 Yellow Warbler 2 Eastern Towhee 2 Chipping Sparrow 1 Field Sparrow 4 Song Sparrow 4 Scarlet Tanager 2 Northern Cardinal 6 Rose-breasted Grosbeak 2 Indigo Bunting 6 Red-winged Blackbird 20 Eastern Meadowlark 2 Common Grackle 5 Brown-headed Cowbird 2 Orchard Oriole 2 Baltimore Oriole 2 American Goldfinch 4 House Sparrow 6 View this checklist online at http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S18801953 ______________________________________________________________________ Ohio-birds mailing list, a service of the Ohio Ornithological Society.
