For those who haven't been yet, there's still time to see this year's bird-related exhibition at the Toledo Museum of Art. "In Fine Feather: Birds, Art, & Science" will run through July 6. It features an impressive historical survey of bird art / illustration, from early works from the 1600s and earlier through standards like Audubon, Wilson, and Gould, to modern works, including originals by Roger Tory Peterson and David Sibley. Some of the artists represented are most notable for their historical value (e.g., John Latham) while others were strikingly talented, even if not well known to current American audiences (e.g., Jacques Barraband). Ohio's own Genevieve Jones (Illustrations of the Nests and Eggs of the Birds of Ohio) is represented as well. Basic information on the exhibition, including a link to an online catalog, is here: http://www.toledomuseum.org/exhibitions/in-fine-feather/ Brian Kennedy, director of the Toledo Museum of Art, has fully embraced the importance of birding in northwest Ohio. This is the second time in three years that the museum has had a bird-related exhibit timed intentionally to coincide with The Biggest Week In American Birding. Paula Reich of the museum staff, who is an active birder as well as an art exhibit, pulled together the works for this year's exhibition. I did a little consulting on the project, and filmed a series of short videos for the museum, talking about Roger Tory Peterson's art, field guides, and impact on conservation; these videos can be viewed at the museum or online. The museum is located in downtown Toledo at 2445 Monroe Street, very close to Interstate 75. It's open Saturday 10 to 5, Sunday noon to 5, Tuesday and Wednesday 10 to 4, Thursday and Friday 10 to 9; closed Monday (and closed July 4th). Admission is free, although there's a charge for parking. If you're going to be anywhere in the area between now and July 6, and if you have any interest in birds, art, or science, it's worth the effort to go and check this out.
