Two hours of birding along the Hocking River around Athens this morning produced 33 species. Highlights included 19 Black Vultures soaring plus one Red-tailed Hawk, Great Blue Herons and one Green Heron foraging along the river banks, 2 Spotted Sandpipers (one in breeding and the other in nonbreeding plumage) along with several Killdeer (and a possible Yellowleg), many Barn Swallows feeding young, a pair of Chipping Sparrow feeding a Brown-Headed Cowbird fledgling on the golf course, and a female American Redstart near Morris Avenue. As of non-birds, a giant Regal Moth at the Peden Stadium, and two Red Foxes near the golf course that were raising some concern among nearby Canada Geese.
