Yesterday afternoon we checked on the Double-crested Cormorant nesting colony at Meander Reservoir in northern Mahoning County. The nests are located on top of three abandoned concrete bridge pier caps in the reservoir. There were at least 44 active nests producing a possible 132+ juveniles. Most of the brownish youngsters are approaching adult size. The three abandoned concrete piers can be seen from the Interstate 80 westbound bridge over Meander when looking to the north. The location is just west of SR46 and east of The Ohio Turnpike. Obviously I-80 is a busy, dangerous road. If you look, don't linger!!! This inland Double-crested Cormorant colony has been here for numerous years and was one of the first in Ohio away from Lake Erie.
