The season of post-breeding wandering (and early migration) is upon us. I stopped by both Sharon Woods & Blendon Woods yesterday, and found some unusual birds. Sharon Woods still had most of its summer birds, but did have several E.Kingbirds & Blue-gray Gnatcatchers, likely early migrants. At Blendon, Thoreau Lake has been lowered, and had an interesting mix of birds, including
Osprey - 1 bird calling as it soared high overhead
Herons - 2 Great Blues and 2 Green Herons
Shorebirds - 1 Solitary Sandpiper and 1-2 Kildeer
Swallows - 4-5 young Cliff Swallows were soaring over the pond as well as along the Lake Trail. I also had 2 Purple Martins flyover the Nature Center parking lot. These are both early migrant species.
