The gull that was reported at Clear Fork Reservoir yesterday as a juvenile Laughing Gull is now being considered a possible juvenile Franklin's gull. Have Franklin's gulls in juvenile plumage ever been seen in Ohio? For the less informed, juvenile plumage is not 1st-winter plumage....apples & oranges. Do Franklin's gulls molt to 1st-winter plumage before migrating south to Ohio, etc? Inconclusive photo.s of this gull were taken but don't show enough detail. When this gull was seen sitting next to a Ring-billed gull, the "Laughing gull" was considerably smaller. How much size variation is there in Juvenile Franklin's and Laughings? Is there an overlap in size? The birders studying the gull this evening thought the bill looked more Franklin's than Laughing. Is the bill fully formed in a juvenile gull? Gull not studied well in flight this evening by the birders present. Thanks for info. I think I'll crack open John Dunn's "Gulls of the Americas" and see if I can get more confused.
