Thank you, Kathi Hutton! I was just sitting here seething after I read Bill Whan's post! Regardless of what any of us feels SHOULD be done with the property - it is private property and the fact that they have allowed us access to this bird should have the birding community feeling very thankful. Showing our gratitude by being argumentative and calling someone a "Nazi", and going as far as advising birders to trespass is totally irresponsible and showing the negative side of birding! Get up there and see that bird quickly folks before they decide to kick us all out and rightfully so! When I arrived at 5pm, it was perched on some rocks along the east side of the pond at Rt 4 and Tawa Rd. and showing the dark legs and feet that ruled out other small white heron species. After preening a while, it began feeding with its trademark quick runs and abrupt turns. A group of us watched from the fence line that parallels Rt 4, and which does in fact have a "Keep Out" sign. I would submit that a high fence topped with multiple strands of barbed wire is a de facto indicator of private property and any reasonable person would think twice before entering, even if the gate was unlocked. Furthermore, calling someone a Nazi when in all likelihood he was merely doing his job does not represent the best behavior of the birding community.
