I've also noticed birds singing this time of year in spite of the cold and ice we can have. The days are getting longer, even house plants look perkier and start blooming. Always thought Valentines Day was for the animals and birds. Next listen for drumming woodpeckers Often hammering on flag poles and road sign poles - prompting the neighbor to say dumb bird there's no bugs on poles But we know they are not dumb they are creating a sound that resonates far beyond wood. Expanding sound undoubtedly expands the little Downy's territorial hopes, don't you think he is capable of scaring them all away if he has a flag pole.
