Hi, During our survey hike today we found 3 Louisiana Waterthrushes singing on territory along the East Branch of the Chagrin River. Another species of note was singing Winter Wren. Keep in mind that Louisiana Waterthrush are an early migrant, generally on territory in northern Ohio in the first 2 weeks of April. Louisiana Waterthrush nests along flowing water. In spite of what may be reported on eBird in western Ohio, keep in mind that by May, migration of this species is complete, and a Waterthrush found in a marsh or near a pond is most certainly a Northern. Given the similarity of these species extreme and extraordinary care must be taken before identifying a Waterthrush found along still waters in May as Louisiana, and should only be done by someone who has studied Louisiana Waterthrush, in appropriate habitat, in detail. Louisiana Waterthrush can be found in Western Ohio, in May, very very small numbers, in riparian habitats, in areas like Oak Openings.
