Spent the morning hiking around these 2 Hocking Hills preserves looking at wildflowers & birds. Both are narrow gorges lined with hemlocks, attracting an interesting mix of migrant residents. Most of the early-arriving residents appear to be in place, and some early migrants were out as well. We hiked the gorge trail at Conkles, and went partway up the Buckeye Trail at Ash Cave. The list included: Red-shouldered Hawk - calling at Conkle's Hollow Sapsucker - 1 calling above Ash Cave Pileated Woodpeckers - calling birds at both locations E.Phoebes - 2-3 at each spot (they probably nest in the cliff walls Blue-headed Vireos - 2 singing at both Conkle's and at Ash Cave Red-eyed Vireo - 1 singing in scrubby woods north of Ash Cave Hermit Thrush - 1 calling at Conkle's, 2 more at Ash Cave Parula Warblers - singing birds at the mouths of both hollows Yellow-throated Warblers - 1 at Conkle's, 3 at Ash Cave (including 1 in pines above the cave) Black&White Warblers - 2 at Conkle's, 3 at Ash Cave Pine Warblers - 2 in the pines above Ash Cave Black-thr.Greens - 7 singing at Conkle's, 6 at Ash Cave Ovenbirds - 1 at mouth of Conkle's; 3 more in scrubby woods north of Ash Cave Hooded Warbler - 1 singing at the mouth of Conkle's Hollow La.Waterthrushes - 2 singing birds along the stream at each location Pine Siskin - 1 singing in trees at mouth of Conkle's Hollow ______________________________________________________________________ Ohio-birds mailing list, a service of the Ohio Ornithological Society.
