I made a few brief stops around the north end of Hoover this morning & this afternoon and found a few neotropical migrants starting to filter in. In the morning I visited Oxbow Island, while the afternoon found me at Mudhen Marsh & the Sunbury causeway. Aside from cormorants, most of the winter waterfowl are gone now. There are still some Turkey Vultures around, as well as lots of resident Red-tailed hawks. Notables included: Gulls- very few, with only a handful of Ring-bills off Oxbow & the Sunbury causeway Swallows - a large roost of 250-300 birds was on the east end of Oxbow Island early in the morning. Mostly Tree & Barn, but with a few Bank & Rough-winged thrown in Gnatcatchers - still abundant, with 3-5 birds at each stop Gray Catbird - 1 was mewling in a shrub next to Mudhen Marsh YellowWarblers - singing birds at every stop, topped by 3 on Oxbow Island Yellow-rumped Warblers - the most common warbler, but never saw more than 7 in a flock Prothonotary Warbler - at least one of the Oxbow Island residents has returned and was singing Batlimore Oriole - a male was singing on the east tip of Oxbow Island early Grackles - abundant, with small flocks everywhere in the morning ______________________________________________________________________ Ohio-birds mailing list, a service of the Ohio Ornithological Society.
