A few days ago I heard the distinctive nasal uh-oh call of a fish crow mixed in with typical American crow caws in my backyard. By the time I was out with binos the birds had moved on. I kept hearing the fish crow sound over the next few days, but this morning I finally found the caller. I didn't report earlier because I feared misidentification of a juvenile American crow (but really sounded more fishy). When I saw the bird this morning it was not begging or showing juvenile behavior. I didn't have binos (afraid if went back inside to get them would lose bird & be late for work!), but the plumage did not appear scruffy, so if it was a juvenile it was fully fledged (is that too early for Ohio?). Anyway, the small murder seems to be hanging around a group of tall pines and mature trees across from a retention pond on Lakeside Circle East (near 6677) in Worthington (Potters Creek subdivision), but flies throughout the neighborhood. I know the fish crows have been expanding range up rivers, and the yards in this neighborhood back to a tributary to the Olentangy River. If anyone else with more experience can stop by to rule out a juvenile (Jim, Ben, Bernie- anyone in town this weekend ;-) that would be great (and a nice potential bird for my yard list!).
